Rebekkah Selassie is an artist based in Los Angeles, also known as Royal Roots. She is passionate about reminding people we are all creators and that art is a healing power we possess. Her works focus on our divine connection with nature, womanhood and her ancestral people; Chorti Maya and Purepecha. Royal Roots highlights the story of her people in Central America and Mexico; and believes the past should be told through their eyes with their stories, not HIStory. Her creations emphasize their majestic kingdoms, unmatched riches and culture, abundant lands; great civilizations, that had master mathematicians, astrologists and architects that built structures that marvel the world to this day.
She is currently working on an acrylic series of her (S)heros, powerful women who defended their people and their lands called She Wears Her Heart On Her Sleeves, featuring portraits of Honduran land and water defender, Berta Cáceres, American human rights defender, Assata Shakur and African environmentalist, Wangari Mattai and more.
